The Fight
Some fighters wait for the perfect moment. Alessandro "Nono" Costa doesn't wait for anything.
Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Costa made it look inevitable. Matched against seasoned veteran Matt Schnell in a 130-pound catchweight featured prelim, Costa went to work from the opening seconds — hands fast, composure unshaken. A right hook dropped Schnell to the canvas. Costa followed him down, mounted his back, and rained hammerfists until referee Herb Dean waved it off. Official time: 2:32 of the first round. TKO. Back-to-back finishes. Three finishes in his last four.
This wasn't a lucky punch. This is a man who accepted the fight short notice, stayed ready, and made a veteran regret showing up. That's the "Nono" way.
The Full Card
Main Card — UFC Fight Night 278 | Meta APEX, Las Vegas
Gabriel Bonfim def. Belal Muhammad — Unanimous Decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) | Welterweight Main Event
The upset of the night. Gabriel "Marretinha" Bonfim systematically dismantled former champion Belal Muhammad from bell to bell — controlling range with his jab, attacking the lead leg relentlessly, and never letting Muhammad find rhythm. All three judges scored it the same way. A statement performance from the 28-year-old Brazilian.
Brendan Allen def. Edmen Shahbazyan — Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) | Middleweight
Allen was workmanlike and methodical, the kind of fighter who wins rounds by making opponents uncomfortable. Shahbazyan showed flashes, but Allen controlled too much of the fight to be denied.
Tom Nolan def. Fares Ziam — Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) | Lightweight
A tight, hard-fought lightweight bout that went the distance. Nolan edged Ziam on all three cards in a fight that was closer than the scorecard gap suggests.
Bryce Mitchell def. Santiago Luna — Submission (Arm-Triangle Choke), Round 3 | Bantamweight
Luna stepped in on nine days' notice and earned respect for lasting into the third. Mitchell, to his credit, kept grinding until he found the arm-triangle late. The finish confirmed Mitchell's grappling depth.
Iwo Baraniewski def. Junior Tafa — KO, Round 1 | Light Heavyweight
Opening the main card with a statement, Poland's Baraniewski dropped Tafa with a low kick, then finished with ground strikes. Third UFC win. Still undefeated in nine MMA fights. One to watch.
Preliminary Card
Alessandro Costa def. Matt Schnell — TKO (Right Hook, Hammerfists), Round 1 (2:32) | 130 lb Catchweight
See above. Fight of the prelims. No contest.
Marcus McGhee def. John Yannis — Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) | Bantamweight
A kickboxing-heavy affair where McGhee's technical edge won the night. Yannis made it competitive in the later rounds and showed he belongs — but McGhee was the sharper fighter when it counted.
Edgar Chairez def. Bruno Silva — Submission (Rear-Naked Choke), Round 1 (4:13) | Flyweight
Chairez put the flyweight division on notice with a dominant first-round submission, ending the fight with the rear-naked choke late in the opening frame.
Chelsea Chandler def. Priscila Cachoeira — Submission (Armbar), Round 1 (3:42) | Women's Bantamweight
Chandler wasted no time, catching Cachoeira in an armbar and forcing the tap before the midpoint of Round 1.
Joanderson Brito def. Jordan Leavitt — Submission (Guillotine Choke), Round 1 (4:19) | Featherweight
Brito went to the guillotine and didn't let go. Leavitt had no answer. Featherweight highlight reel.
Ketlen Souza def. Ariane Carnelossi — KO (Head Kick, Punches), Round 1 (1:34) | Women's Strawweight
One of the fastest finishes of the night. Souza landed a head kick that changed everything, then finished with strikes on the ground. Under two minutes.
Jeisla Chaves def. Yuneisy Duben — Split Decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) | Women's Strawweight
The lone split on the night. Chaves took the narrow victory in a scrappy, back-and-forth fight that could've gone either way.
